The Wellington Night Shelter provides emergency and transitional accommodation for men experiencing homelessness and supports them in their recovery. We pride ourselves on the support, care and positive impact we provide to the lives of people who are experiencing homelessness and we constantly strive towards our goal of supporting guests into permanent accommodation.
We are committed to the Te Mahana strategy for ending homelessness and to help us in our mission we are looking to fill some essential support work roles.
As a Senior Support Worker or Support Worker or Night Support Worker for the Wellington Night Shelter, you will welcome and provide a safe, stable environment for guests, assisting them with a range of support needs. You will provide care for the well-being of others and make sound decisions, assessing and responding to crisis/risk in a calm manner. Building appropriate, supportive, professional relationships with guests, staff and our community is essential. Senior Support Workers also take a lead on assessments and support planning.
These are broad roles and you’ll complete various other tasks such as: completing forms, writing shift & client notes, supporting with laundry and responsive cleaning duties and collecting rent payments from guests.
These roles cover various shifts. The night shelter is open 24 hours a day, every day so we have opportunities for covering day, evening & night shifts, and currently need casual, permanent and temporary staff – dependent on experience and availability.
Each 24-hour period is broken down into the following shifts: 8.00am to 4.00pm;
3.30pm to 11.00pm; & 10.30pm to 8.30am

To be successful in this role you will be:
Additionally, you will be required to have good numerical and basic computer skills.
These roles are particularly suited to people with experience of working in the social care sector or people studying towards social work, mental health, addiction, care or other related qualifications. However, training is provided so some roles could also suit people with excellent communication, customer services and problem-solving skills, such as those developed in the hospitality sector. The Senior Support Worker Role does require relevant qualifications or training and experience.
